Lighthouse
Google's open-source tool for auditing web pages on performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO.
Definition
Lighthouse is an open-source tool from Google (built into Chrome DevTools and PageSpeed Insights) that audits a web page against four categories — Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO — producing scores out of 100 plus actionable recommendations. Lighthouse runs synthetic tests in a controlled environment; Core Web Vitals are the same metrics measured against real user traffic.
Why it matters
Lighthouse is the quickest sanity check on a site's performance and SEO posture. Sub-50 Lighthouse on mobile is a red flag. 90+ on a marketing site is now table stakes — and absolutely achievable on Next.js with the right setup.
